Why do I need a pap smear?

A pap smear is a test that screens cells taken off the cervix for cervical cancer. Routine pap smears are recommended for all women from the ages of 21-65, regardless of sexual activity. In most cases, cervical cancer does not create any symptoms and is often diagnosed only by a routine pap smear. Early detection is key in effective treatment of cervical cancer. It is important for women to be proactive about their wellbeing and intervene early with any health concerns. Annual pap smears also offers an opportunity for yearly STD screening. Protect yourself and your health.

What is HPV?

The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a virus that is contracted though sex and can lead to genital warts and an increased risk of cervical cancer in women and penile cancer in men. The HPV virus is very common and does not present with symptoms often. Protect yourself from the HPV virus by discussing vaccination with your health care provider. The Gardisil vaccine protects against several strains of the HPV virus including the strains that cause genital warts and cancer. It is recommended that all individuals start receiving Gardisil at age 11 or 12. Older teens and young adults who have not received the vaccine can still do so and are recommended to have it before the age of 26.
